Vladimir Ivanovich Sokolov (1872-1946) – artist of decorative and applied arts. Graduated from the Stroganov School, then the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, where his teachers were I. Levitan, V. Polenov, V. Serov. He participated in the first exhibition of the “World of Art” in 1899. By the early 1900s, V.I. Sokolov was already a recognized artist, a participant in many exhibitions, and the winner of awards and prizes. At the request of the philanthropist S.T. Morozov, the artist became the head of the folk crafts workshop in Sergiev Posad. He was in charge of the educational carpentry art workshop of the Moscow provincial zemstvo from 1903 to 1920. In 1920, Sokolov was invited to work in the Commission for the Protection of Monuments of Art and Antiquity of the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius. In 1925, a branch of the AKhRR was created in Sergiev Posad, V.I. Sokolov became a member, and in 1928-1930, the chairman of this organization. In 1927, V.I. Sokolov made woodcut illustrations for a guide to the Sergievsky Museum, having received lessons in wood engraving from I.N. Pavlov. The artist’s works are kept in the State Tretyakov Gallery, the N.D. Bartram Art and Pedagogical Museum of Toys, the St. Petersburg State Institute of Art and Crafts, and in the museums of Irkutsk and Nizhny Tagil.
